My journey as an NROTC Midshipman at Xavier University of Louisiana has been a testament to the transformative power of education, service, and resilience. Having previously served as an enlisted Marine, my transition to college life and officer training has been a unique adventure. In this column, I wanted to share my experiences as a prior-enlisted Marine navigating the challenges of academia, military training, and the vibrant community at an HBCU.

The Marine Corps instilled in me a sense of discipline, determination, and a love for service. However, the decision to pursue a college education and become an officer brought a new set of challenges. At Xavier University of Louisiana, I found not only a supportive academic environment but also a community that values diversity and embraces a rich cultural heritage.

At Xavier, traditions run deep, and being a part of the NROTC program adds an extra layer of camaraderie. From the vibrant homecoming celebrations to the soulful sounds of the marching band, every day on campus feels like a shared journey rooted in history. As an NROTC Midshipman, I’ve learned to embrace these traditions while also embodying the values of honor, courage, and commitment that are at the core of military service.

However, balancing a demanding academic curriculum with military obligations is no small feat. As a midshipman, I find myself juggling rigorous coursework with early morning physical training sessions, leadership labs, and military science classes. The academic challenges are steep, but the skills acquired through the NROTC program, such as time management and discipline, have proven invaluable in helping me excel both in the classroom and in my military responsibilities.

One way I’ve grown to excel is by becoming a leader, and transitioning from an enlisted Marine to an NROTC Midshipman has allowed me to evolve. The principles instilled in me during my time in the Corps serve as a foundation for the leadership skills I now develop in the NROTC program. The diverse and inclusive environment at HBCU has further enriched my understanding of effective leadership.

Overall, my journey from an enlisted Marine to an NROTC Midshipman at Xavier is a testament to the resilience and adaptability that defines my military experience. The intersection of my military background with the vibrant culture of Xavier has shaped me into a leader who values diversity, service, and continuous growth.

As I navigate the challenges of academia and military training, I am grateful for the opportunities that both the Marine Corps and Xavier have provided, shaping me into a well-rounded individual ready to lead with purpose and dedication.

The shift from a self-centered perspective to a leadership-centered one is both an honor and a heavy burden. It is an understanding that a military unit’s success is dependent on the collective strength, resilience, and dedication of its members. The awareness that the welfare, professional growth, and morale of the Marines I will lead are inextricably linked to the mission’s success serves as a guiding principle for all of my actions and decisions.
