Spring brings in many changes, and one of those changes is the new positions for Xavier’s Student Government Association and Pharmacy Student Association.

On Wednesday, Feb. 28th, Xavier released the voting results for class council, royal court, SGA, and PSA executive positions. Chase Patterson, a junior biology/pre-medicine major from Georgia, was elected SGA President. Patterson ran unopposed for the position and previously held other SGA positions, including Freshman Class President, Sophomore Class President, and Senator-At-Large.

In the very anticipated Mister and Miss Xavier positions for the 2024-2025 school year, Chamberlain Newman, a junior biology/pre-medicine major from Houston, Tx., and Youma Diabira, a junior english major with a double concentration in education and creative writing, clinched the titles. Newman, who previously held the title of Mister Junior, will be the 10th Mister Xavier. Diabira, who also held numerous SGA positions and ran opposed, will be the university’s 89th Miss Xavier.

Students spent the weeks prior to the elections campaigning on campus to their fellow students. Candidates provided information on their policies and why they should receive the student’s consideration for that position on campus. Campaigning season always comes with excitement and anticipation from the students running for a position and students who will directly see where their support will be in the Student Government Association.

For the winners on election night, their hard work and dedication feel justified as they will now prepare to serve the student body for next year. Newman mentioned how important his win is and how he is preparing to be the 10th Mister Xavier.

“I know this election marks the beginning of a journey filled with hard work, dedication, and commitment,” said Newman. “But I am grateful for the opportunity and ready to serve as a beacon of light for students on campus and throughout the world.”

While others like Newman are preparing to serve in their positions, for some, the journey is not over. Runoff elections are taking place for positions where no candidate crossed the 51-percent threshold. Runoff voting will take place on Monday, Mar. 4 from 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. on X-Connect.

As students continue to vie for their respective positions, many continue to campaign virtually through social media with the same eagerness as their in-person campaigns. Skylar Stephens, a junior mass communication major from Ohio, is one of the candidates in the runoff election for the SGA Secretary position. Stephens says it’s important to keep dedication to the runoff elections.

“I’m pretty confident in my campaign because it got me the majority of the votes out of all the other candidates,” Stephens said. “But I don’t want to let off campaigning and think that I already won because that would be my biggest downfall, so I want to keep my foot on the gas how I’ve been doing because that has helped me get to where I am today.”
