On Tuesday, October 8, the Xavier University of Louisiana Police Department organized its anticipated “Night Out Against Crime” outside of the Convocation Center on Xavier’s campus. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the event was a vibrant blend of community engagement, education, and entertainment. Faculty, staff, and residents all came together to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and the Xavier community.

The university aimed at providing an open and welcoming space for students to meet the campus police officers and other local law enforcement in a non-confrontational and friendly environment. Numerous activities kept attendees engaged throughout the evening; however, the public safety demonstrations were one of the event’s highlights. Food stations supplied attendees with hamburgers, hot dogs, and nachos.

“It definitely made me feel more comfortable with the police after seeing bad interactions throughout my life. The police at this event were very inviting and understanding, which I haven’t experienced before” said Xavier student and attendee, Dilon Parker.

“I think that is very important for communities, even Xavier, being a school, to be aware of the law enforcement and who exactly is a part of it” Parker said.

Alongside the festivities, resource tables from key university offices were set up to provide additional support to students. The Office of Counseling Services offered information about mental health resources and coping mechanisms, aiming to raise awareness about the importance of mental well-being and the services available on campus.

The Office of Inclusion and Social Justice was also present, distributing materials that highlighted Xavier’s ongoing commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all students. These offices played an important role in addressing social issues while ensuring students know where to turn for help in times of need.

Officers at the event believe participating in events such as “Night Out Against Crime” is the first step in building a relationship.

“I have been here with Xavier’s police department six years as of now. I became an officer due to my father serving in the force for years which influenced me to do so. I think the best way to support your local police is to attend the events that are hosted and come to meet us,” said Chief Changamire Durall, the Police Chief for Xavier University Police Department.

As Xavier University continues its efforts to ensure a safe and inclusive environment, events like the Night Out Against Crime play a vital role in bringing together diverse segments of the campus community, all while emphasizing the importance of safety and well-being.
