Not many students are able to say they are the first person to do something, but that’s not the case for mass communication sophomore Ja’lyn Jones. Jones has the privilege of being the first Historically Black College University (HBCU) student to participate in the Fulbright program this past summer at Bristol University in Bristol, UK. Fulbright is a scholarship program that provides grants for students to study abroad. The program is geared toward enhancing intercultural relations.

Jones was first made aware of the program through exponential honors at Xavier University. He also attributes his participation in the prestigious program to Dr. Shearon Roberts, the department head for mass communication.

“She [Dr. Roberts] was highly instrumental in providing the groundwork and opportunity for me to successfully apply for the internship. She was also impactful in helping me elevate my skills and expression whilst applying,” he explained.

Jones, who is from Holy Springs, Ms., did not have a lot of experience travelling prior to the program. He said his time in the UK was beyond beneficial in many ways. Most notably, he believes was his exposure to the diversity of cultures and ways of life, which he found fascinating. He noted how he was left with a better understanding of cultures. Jones observed many different, yet similar human experiences while abroad.

Jones truly believes his experiences abroad have led to personal growth. His experience broadened his perspectives on his own abilities and gave him a new sense of confidence in pursuing his goals. According to Jones, this program made him realize he could reach people in “unimaginable ways at this stage of his life”.  The program offered an opportunity to sharpen skills in preparation for other similar programs.  Jones suggests and encourages other students to seek out and participate.

Although the application process is competitive, Jones reminds everyone the best asset is to be authentically yourself!

“The best approach to this process requires complete focus, seriousness, confidence and an unwavering work ethic,” he stated.
