Carry On Aims for Die Hard Glory but Falls Short

 By Corbin Johnson

The film “Carry On,” starring Taron Egerton, Sofia Carson, and Jason Bateman, is considered this generation’s “Die Hard.” This Christmas thriller takes place on Christmas Eve at an airport, where a TSA agent must stop a toxic gas from killing people boarding a flight.

While the movie attempts to be a modern version of “Die Hard,” it falls short of its predecessor. Despite outstanding performances from the cast, there are points where the film falls flat, leaving many questions unanswered. Egerton plays the main character, who aspires to work with the LA police force but is forced into a difficult situation by Bateman’s antagonist. A conflict arises between Egerton’s character and one of his security friends, which is resolved abruptly at the end without explanation.

The film suffers from numerous plot holes that may leave viewers confused. On the positive side, it features good action sequences and transitions that help move the story forward. However, these often lead to confusing scenes that lack proper explanation.

“Carry On” eventually seems to abandon storytelling in favor of explosions, suspenseful music, and arguments, proclaiming itself as the next “Die Hard” but failing to deliver on what made the original so iconic. Unlike “Die Hard,” which featured characters audiences cared about and wanted to learn more about, the characters in “Carry On” feel empty and lack depth.

Despite its issues, the film excels in delivering great action sequences and transitions. However, it is not particularly rewatchable due to its confusing plot. While it attempts to use its Christmas theme to become a holiday classic like “Die Hard,” it falls short of achieving that status.

The movie initially captures attention with a promising premise but ultimately disappoints with plot holes and unanswered questions. The cast tries their best to work with the uneven script, but even their facial expressions betray the film’s underlying issues.

“Carry On” may appeal to young viewers looking for a new Christmas thriller, but its promising start is marred by a poor finish. The film is now streaming on Netflix.
