Due to Tropical Storm Francine, Xavier University’s Student Government Association (SGA) moved their presidential debate watch party to a virtual screening instead of the planned in-person watch party.

The decision came as the university elected to close campus at 5pm on Tuesday evening.

The screening is still intended to do what the in-person watch party would have done, only in a new format.

Keziah Smith, Director of Elections, described the event as a “fun night full of getting people educated.”

Before the event switched virtual, SGA was planning a tabling event, led by campus and outside organizations will provide students with extra information on the election, the process of voting and its importance.

“We all have to vote in November.” Smith said.

The event was scheduled to take place in the Admin auditorium, with doors opening at 7:30pm, with the debate beginning at 8pm.

But to reiterate, the event has now moved online.

“It’s really like a movie night,” Smith said when describing the original plans. “We’re gonna have a projector. We’re gonna have the debate streaming, so we’re gonna watch it live.”

Food was going to be provided, and students were going to receive free merch with proof of valid voter registration.

“You’re not gonna wanna miss a thing!” Smith said.

Although the event is now virtual, students are still encouraged to tune in.

Students can participate by watching the debate in their homes, taking a picture of themselves watching the debate, and then uploading the picture on Instagram and tagging SGA!

SGA’s Instagram name is @XULASGA.
