On November 1st, the UC Ballroom at Xavier University of Louisiana was alive with energy and creativity as the Xavier Activities Board hosted the highly anticipated “You Got Served Dance Battle”. Inspired by the iconic dance film You Got Served, the event showcased an array of dance styles, including krumping, breakdancing, and street dancing.

“I felt that the dance battle was actually very fun and hilarious to watch. It was something I haven’t seen at school before, and it was funny to watch people I know dressed in these clothes and still be able to dance,” said senior Kerrigan Mocke.

As students filled the ballroom, the atmosphere was electrifying, fueled by the beats of a live DJ. Dancers were surrounded by the audience in a large circle and came inside the circle to showcase their talent and captivate the audience with their performances and difference in dance styles.

“I didn’t expect for the dancers to have actual routines, and I even saw a couple dancers do standing flips or even be flipped over during certain rounds. It was really shocking at times” she said.

The highlight of the event was the dance battle itself, where dancers faced off in a series of rounds until a winner was chosen, each dressed in oversized shirts, shorts, and hats tilted to the side. The DJ played a mix of throwback songs from the 1990’s or early 2000’s, to help dancers and audience members feel as if they were on the street watching dancers in the 90’s. After the dances, one winner emerged, taking home a gift card as a prize for their performance.

“After watching it made me wonder why I didn’t register when I had the chance to last week. Everybody present was very accepting and inviting of people who were at different difficulty levels of dancers,” said senior Jordan Kerrick. “Maybe next time I’ll put my throwback outfits to use and show my skills, but for now it was fun to watch the dancers do their thing,” he said.

As the event concluded, participants and spectators alike left with smiles, inspired by the displays of talent and camaraderie that defined the event. The Xavier Activities Board said they were committed to providing students with opportunities to immerse themselves in various forms of art and culture, making events like the “You Got Served Dance Battle” a reflection of their mission.
